New publication in the Journal of Peace Research: And still she rises? Perceptions of the demobilizing effects of repression, with Ragnhild Nordås and Ingrid Vik Bakken. In a survey experiment among the U.S. public, we find that rape is perceived as more demobilizing across the board. However, defying prominent gender stereotypes, respondents do not expect that women are more likely to demobilize than men, even following rape. Instead, they are assumed to mobilize friends and talk to journalists. These findings are noteworthy, as public perceptions of who asserts political agency under what conditions can have tangible socio-political ramifications, e.g., with respect to support for social movements or leadership preferences. https://academic.oup.com/jpr/advance-article/doi/10.1093/jopres/xjaf005/8471624
